WATKINS GLEN, NY (June 30, 2018) – 3GT Racing’s No. 15 Lexus RC F GT3, with Jack Hawksworth in the driver’s seat, took the pole during the qualifying session for the Sahlens Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International. Kyle Marcelli drove the No. 14 and will start P3 in Sunday’s race.
Marcelli was quick right from the start of the 15-minute session, making his fastest lap, 144:712, in his third lap.
“Kyle put in a great lap and we were fortunate to run one less lap than the rest of the field, so we will have a bit more tire than some of the other front runners,” said John Gentilozzi, 3GT Racing’s Technical Director.
This is Hawksworth’s second pole at Watkins Glen. His first at WGI in 2017 was 1:44:786. His fastest lap today (the sixth lap) was 1:44:499.
“We struggled a bit with the car earlier, but the team did a fantastic job,” Hawksworth said. “On the first couple of laps I got some traffic in front of me and I couldn’t really get a clean lap. Near the end the tires were going off a bit, but in the last couple of corners I was able to pull out some time.”
It was an exciting qualifying session. Gentilozzi said that when Jack was three corners from the end, timing software showed him at a 1:44.8. “A moment later he was on the pole,” he said.
“A really big effort by Jack, and it shows how hard this team has been working on the setup of the car. It’s going to be a long day tomorrow, and the heat will play a big role, but it’s the same for everyone, and I think we have a good chance to be on the podium tomorrow.
For 3GT Racing’s Managing Partner, Paul Gentilozzi, this is proof that everybody in this program is committed to doing their best.
“We’re really lucky. And we’re committed, everybody in our program is working hard and committed to racing hard, every time,” he said. “That’s what we’re here to do.”
The Sahlens Six Hours of The Glen, the third endurance race in the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, will begin at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, July 1, and can be seen live on FS1 beginning at 9:30 a.m.
